First tropical depression of the season forms off the mid-Atlantic

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said today that a tropical depression has formed off the mid-Atlantic coast, the first of the Atlantic hurricane season.

The depression, which is off of Rhode Island, is not expected to threaten any land areas and its general movement is expected to continue over the next 24 to 48 hours.
